'Tiohtiá:ke': Exploring the challenges facing Montreal's indigenous communities According to a 2016 census, some 35,000 residents of Montreal, Canada identify as indigenous. The city is also home to one of the country's fastest-growing indigenous populations. But these communities still face major challenges as a result of generational trauma linked to Canada's dark past. Innu journalist and writer Michel Jean's eighth book, "Tiohtiá:ke", explores this theme through a fictional account of an indigenous man who was banished from the Nutashkuan community.
