India's gig economy: Workers escape unemployment but face job insecurity The gig economy is nothing new in India, where the informal sector employs 80 percent of the country's workforce. India's growing smartphone market with cheap internet connections has provided opportunities for millions of unemployed people to become gig workers. This means that they have no written contracts, paid leave or social protection.
