Hip-hop turns 50: Musical genre which carries spirit of protest was created by Bronx DJ Kool Herc Hip Hop is turning 50 year old. The musical genre can be traced back to a party in the Bronx in New York on August 11th, 1973 and an 18 year old DJ who went by the name DJ Kool Herc. He began speaking over the beat of the music reminiscent of the “toasting” style heard in Jamaica. It wasn’t long before the style could be heard all over New York. That made way for a range of artists including the Sugarhill Gang, and “ Rapper’s Delight” which took Hip Hop mainstream in the 1980s and topped the Billboard charts.
